Unboxing: Khorne Lord of Skulls

This is so [expunged] awesome. Let’s get ready to wreck havoc in the name of Khorne (or wait, hold that thought, I’ll get back to that). So I met up with the lads for Barrelcon, our annual weekender of beers and gaming and they pulled surprise on me. They’d gotten me a Khorne Lord of Skulls for my 40th birthday. This is a model that I’ve wanted since it was released, 4 or 5 years ago. The Lord of Skulls is a bit odd, no doubt, but it’s still bad ass. It got such a great sense of aggression with out being too obvious. The price tag has always put me off. So much for just one model … I just can’t bring spoil myself that much. I think it was Paul who pretty much summed my view on that model: This is the kind of model that you know you want but you’ll probably never treat yourself to. Yeah, spot on! And that made it such an awesome gift.

I though we could take a look inside the box. But first and foremost thanks again Andreas, Johan, Kristian, Michael and Paul. Much appreciated, much appreciated!

The box different from your normal one, with inner box tray. A bit more upscale. You get six big sprues inside the box. Four are completely identical (the tank) and two are individual (the body). It looks like a quite intricate model to build. The instructions have like 35 steps.

Lots of bits have detailing on both sides. I think you could get a lot of mileage out of the kit if you would decide to convert rather than build it straight out of the box. The tank tracks are pretty brutal. Just check out the icon of Khorne on each track.

The body is great too. Again the level of detail is great. They really went the extra mile designing it. There is obviously skulls everywhere but also icons, cables, battle damage and much more. I probably haven’t seen half yet.

The level of detailing is like any Chaos Boon, hit or miss. Great if you want to build it like a Khorne Lord of Skull or convert it for use in your Khorne army. A bit of a hassle if you, say, just started a Thousand Sons army and want to keep on painting stuff blue. This is where I’m at right now – should I build it straight out of the box as a Khorne Lord of Skulls or should I convert it to fit my Thousand Sons? If I do that – how do I handle all the Khorne iconography? What elements are required to make it feel like a Daemon Engine of Tzeentch and the Thousand Sons? It is probably doable but the risk of messing up is substantial.

And what would I call it? The Lord of Dust?
